Fiona Apple (born Fiona Apple McAfee Maggart on September 13, 1977) is a Grammy-winning American singer-songwriter. She gained popularity through her 1996 album Tidal, especially with the single "Criminal", and because of the music video made for it. Her music is rooted equally in early jazz, pop, and alt-rock and is fundamentally based on very personal poetic verses backed up with progressive production often featuring instruments such as the french horn, optigan or even a full orchestra. Apple is a vegan and a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

"Criminal" is a piano rock song written by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple for her debut album Tidal (1996). Apple described the song as a description of "feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality." It was released as the album's third single in September 1997 (see 1997 in music), and is widely considered Apple's breakout hit, peaking at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 40th Grammy Awards. The song was listed at number seventy-one on Blender magazine's 2005 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born".

"Fast as You Can" is a song written by Fiona Apple, and produced by Jon Brion for her second album, When the Pawn. It was released as the album's lead single in late 1999 in the United States and in February 2000 in the United Kingdom. It became one of Apple's most successful singles in both countries, and its music video, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was well-received.

"Parting Gift" is a song written by American singer Fiona Apple and recorded for her third album Extraordinary Machine (2005). It was produced by Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew and is the only song from Extraordinary Machine not to have been originally recorded during the Jon Brion-produced sessions. Apple was able to record it on her first take. MTV News described the song as "a characteristically bitter breakup song", and its protagonist chastises a former beau (calling him a "silly, stupid pastime") whilst lamenting their failed relationship: "It ended bad but I loved what we started".

Tidal produced six singles: "Shadowboxer", "Slow Like Honey", "Sleep to Dream", "The First Taste", "Criminal" and "Never Is a Promise". "Criminal", the album's most popular single, won a 1998 Grammy Award for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" and was named the single of 1997 in a poll of Rolling Stone readers. The music video for "The First Taste" never aired in the U.S.

The 2005 album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise by Bettye Lavette is titled after a lyric in "Sleep to Dream", and includes a cover of that song.

In 2008, Entertainment Weekly named Tidal the 20th Best Album of the last 25 years (1983-2008).
